You may remember hearing a few days ago that Universal formally announced a trio of live-action Lego movies that’ll be individually helmed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman 1984), Joe Cornish (The Kid Who Would Be King), and Jake Kasdan (Red One). But we were, all of us, deceived, for it turns out there’s not three, not five, but four live-action Lego movies in the works.
Buried among the news this week is that Lego’s also taking a spin at bringing its Ninjago toy line to live-action. No director was revealed, but brothers (and Star Trek Prodigy creators) Kevin and Dan Hageman have been tapped to write its script. The duo already have experience with the franchise, since they created and executive produced the first nine seasons of its CG series on Cartoon Network (and later Netflix). As to what ground said movie will cover, that too is currently in the shadows.
Ninjago first started all the way back in 2011 and centers on a team of color-coded ninjas with different elemental powers like fire, ice, and earth. (Also, one of them’s apparently a robot?) Trained in the art of “spinjitzu,” the six ninjas protect the titular city from evil forces like Lord Garmadon (who’s also the father of the green ninja Lloyd), time traveling elemental masters, and biker gangs. (Y’know, normal ninja stuff.) Both the toy line and show are still ongoing and pretty popular, and back when Warner Bros. was making Lego movies, Ninjago was the brand’s first (and only) original creation get a theatrical film…which went on to become the series’ first box office dud.
How do we think these new Lego movies, Ninjago included, will fare in live-action? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
