‘Despicable Me 4’ leads box-office sales with weekend haul of $75M (NASDAQ:CMCSA)

“Despicable Me 4” was the No. 1 box-office draw during the holiday weekend with an estimated $75 million in ticket sales from Friday to Sunday and $122.6 million since its Wednesday premiere. The animated sequel from Comcast’s (NASDAQ:CMCSA) Universal Pictures is the latest summer release to be considered a hit after a slow start to the season.

A succession of sequels including Sony’s (NYSE:SONY) “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” Pixar’s (NYSE:DIS) “Inside Out 2” and Paramount’s (NASDAQ:PARA) “A Quiet Place: Day One” has performed strongly, according to studio data.

“Inside Out 2” in its fourth weekend of release generated $30 million domestically and $78.3 million overseas to lift its total haul to $1.22 billion. It was the first movie to exceed $1 billion in ticket sales since the release of “Barbie” last summer.

“A Quiet Place: Day One” dropped from first place to third with $21 million domestically in its second weekend. It also rang up $21.1 million in theaters outside the United States and Canada, bringing the global total to $178.2 million.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to data compiled by Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
