Pink Floyd sell catalog to Sony Music for $400 million

Pink Floyd have sold their catalog to Sony Music for $400 million after several years of band in-fighting and near agreements, the Financial Times reports.

Notably, the deal includes Pink Floyd’s recorded music rights, but not their publishing.  However, the band has signed over their name and likeness, giving the label rights to merch and potential movie and TV spinoffs.

It closes just weeks after David Gilmour admitted to Rolling Stone that it would be a “dream” to sell Pink Floyd’s catalog and get out of the “mud bath” — presumably referencing his longtime contentious relationship with former bandmate Roger Waters. Last month, it was reported Pink Floyd was in “advanced talks” with Sony for a $500 million deal.

Pink Floyd first attempted to sell their catalog in 2022, but those discussions were put on hold amidst band in-fighting and Waters’ incendiary comments about Ukraine and Israel. Back then, Sony was among the prospective buyers alongside Warner Music, BMG, and Hipgnosis.

The catalog acquisition is Sony’s latest massive deal with a legacy artist. Earlier this year, Queen’s catalog and likeness rights fetched a reported $1.27 billion.

Meanwhile, Gilmore is out on a limited tour of the US, Europe, and the UK (get tickets here) in support of his new solo album, Luck and Strange.
