Top 100 Starting Pitchers : It’s July 1st, Eh?!

0

Happy Monday AND Happy Canada Day, to my fellow Razzballians!

It’s July 1st, Eh? I’ve always seen July as an ideal date to assess where the fantasy teams are at and plan the rest of the summer accordingly. But it’s also a day where we get all done up in our redshirts and (politely) tie one on for patriotism, not unlike what many of you will be doing this Thursday.

I know that most of you are saving up your stamina for a July 4th celebration of independence and the subsequent gorging of hot dogs, (as I did last night), but I wanted to take today to shine a tiny light on your friendly neighbors to the north on Canada’s 157th birthday.

In other words, I wanted to send out another installment of the Top 100 Starting Pitchers with a bit of a shout that aligns with our home and native land’s birthday. That sounds like a pretty good idea, eh?

So here it is. I’ll give you the full run-down of our Top 100 list, then pick one from each section of 10 to blurb out a bit. To be honest, I tried to create a list of the Top 10 Canadians as a subtitle for each section, then found it was a pretty tough task to complete. I had about 20 names before I realized I hadn’t included one baseball player. Oops!

Don’t get your lumberjack-print knickers in a knot. After hours and hours of deliberation,  (aka milliseconds), I’ve settled on the ten that work best for us today.

But, before we get to the list, I need to plug a couple of things for y’all first. If you want to check the spot I usually have open when flipping through my information on Sunday afternoons, you’re looking for that Player Rater leaderboard. This is always a great resource to use if you’re doing research. A bit of this, and a splash of that goes into the prep work for our weekly Top 100 Starting Pitchers list.

Of course, if you’re one of those doubting-your-own-gut-instinct fantasy managers, or just want to use a great resource that will point you in the right direction every week, The Streamonator is here to help you answer those burning questions.

If you haven’t signed up for it, this should be your go-to reference for the entire season. It will save you a lot of time researching and often includes those “Oh, I never thought about that” solutions. The Razzball subscriptions are well worth the price of admission. If you’re serious about improving throughout the season, check the link, yo.

RANK

(LAST WEEK)

Name TEAM NOTES
1 Zack Wheeler Phillies I have a feeling it’ll be him and Burnes flip-flopping for a while until one of the others in the Top 5 makes the jump.
2 Corbin Burnes Orioles A good start last week (7 IP, 9 H, 1 ER, 5 K), but on the inactive list this week due to  ‘baby making’ a few months ago. He should be back on July 3rd.
3 (4) Tarik Skubal Tigers SEE BELOW
4 (3)  Tyler Glasnow Dodgers We can call this one the ‘start of mortality’. 5 ER in 3 IP with just 1 K. His worst start of the year.
5 Ranger Suarez Phillies 4 runs last week, but only 2 were earned. He was pitching well at the time of writing, but I couldn’t watch because my TV was hijacked by a Fortniting pre-teen.
6 (7) Chris Sale Braves Took the loss last week. That’s the bad news. The good? 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 11 Ks. Aka better numbers than he had in his previous two wins. This is vintage Chris Sale…without the burned or sliced-up jerseys.
7 (9) Garrett Crochet White Sox 5.2 innings of shutout ball last start. 6 Ks. Everything looks great…until we see the quote from Pedro Grifol that they’re planning on “dwindling his workload down a bit”. Start him while you can before he gets shut down.
8 (12) Grayson Rodriguez Orioles Good enough start last week to move him back up into the Top 10 ahead of a couple of others who had rougher weeks.
9 (22) Logan Gilbert Mariners Big boost from last week’s ranking (which was too low). The marathon runner does not walk. He’s given up just 3 BBs in his last 8 GS (53.2 IP).
10 (6) Tanner Houck Red Sox 4.1 IP, 7 ER, 3 HR, 4 Ks on Saturday night? Houck Tuah. Someone get that guy a Kleenex.
11 (8) Luis Gil Yankees More walks (4) and ER (5) in his last start. Hopefully, the wheels aren’t coming off. 4th ranked on Streamonator for this week.
12 (15) George Kirby Mariners SEE BELOW
13 (10) Kevin Gausman Blue Jays I can’t drop him past the Top 20 because it’s Canada Day, but if you search for him on the season-long player rater, you’ll get a sore scrolling finger. Whaut a Disaustere (not actually Canadian spelling).
14 (11)  Shoto Imanaga Cubs Did you know that the English translation for Imanaga is “I guess he’s not a robot”?
15 (16) Aaron Nola Phillies 9 strikeouts in a decent start against Miami last week.
16 (20) Seth Lugo Royals He’s 6th on the Player Rater, so you can’t argue with him being here. Won his league-leading 11th game Sunday (post-edit).
17 (23) Sonny Gray Cardinals This one is boosted by the Player Rater too (8th), but the K/9 and ratio numbers are solid.
18 (21) Ronel Blanco Astros I’m on that team of people who wrote this guy off after the sticky stuff jail sentence. He did give up 3 ER on 3 HRs last week, but it was the first loss he had after a string of 3 dubs in a row.
19 (26) Pablo Lopez Twins The 14 K near-perfect game moves him up a lot from last week, but he needs to rip off a few more to get back to where he debuted this spring.
20 (13) Luis Castillo Mariners There are a few of these “top” guys who should be lower than the Top 20. They get some more leeway because of history, track record, and ability to bounce back though.
21 (19) Jack Flaherty Tigers Even after giving up 5 ER in 5.2 IP, he’s still a Top 20 arm. 7 Ks to mix in with the 3 HR allowed at LAA.
22 (14) Max Fried Braves Three QS in a row with just one ER in each. He should move up and probably will pass a couple who are ahead of him by next week.
23 (17) Cole Ragans Royals Still ranked this high even after coughing up 5 ER to CLE in 4.2 IP on Saturday. Strikeouts.
24 (18) Dylan Cease Padres 7 innings of one-hit ball, 0 ER, and 9 Ks. Could make a case that he should be in the Top 20, especially if the BBs would come down.
25 (21) Jared Jones Pirates SEE BELOW
26 (18) Freddy Peralta Brewers A nice start last week, but only 5 IPs. Had given up a HR v CHC yesterday in 2 IPs at the time of writing, but had also already struck out 3.
27 Joe Ryan Twins He’s dropped to 21st on the Player Rater (from 16 last week), but he’s still a top arm. Be careful this week v HOU though.
28 Paul Skenes Pirates See the load management comment below (Jared Jones). Until he gets shut down, ride the Skene-machine right through July and early August.
29 (30) Mitch Keller Pirates I’m higher than most, (not a Canada Day euphemism), but his two starts against STL and NYM this week have him in the Top 15 Streamonator calls.
30 (29) Nick Lodolo Reds IL for right now, but it’s a blister and not arm or leg-related. Let’s just hope it’s not an Al Leiter blister that lingers for a year and a half.
31 (34) Reynaldo Lopez Braves Another jump here, albeit not as much as last week’s. He’s nestled between Dylan Cease and Jack Flaherty on the P.R. for reference.
32 (40) Gavin Stone Dodgers Complete game shutout. 4 H, 7 Ks. Heart emoji.
33 (41) Tanner Bibee Guardians Not as flashy as the double-digit strikeouts from a couple of weeks ago, but he’s posted 3 QS in a row and won every one of them.
34 (37) Zac Gallen Diamondbacks 6 innings of one-hit shutout ball with 7 Ks. The first start in about a month is pretty encouraging.
35 Jose Berrios Blue Jays Even with two decent starts this week (v HOU, at SEA), I still can’t justify moving him up higher than this. Streamonator likes him this week too.
36 (32) Bryce Miller Mariners Another Mariner beauty. (See below).
37 (39) Gerrit Cole Yankees SEE BELOW
38 (33) Logan Webb Giants 7 innings, a few walks, a couple of earned runs, and half a dozen strikeouts. That sounds like the Webb line for most starts.
39 (34) Bryan Woo Mariners Eligible to return July 10th. It’s a hamstring injury, (not an arm injury), which is the only reason he’s staying up here for now.
40 (45) Christopher Sanchez Phillies Probably too high here, but the results are there. A complete game shutout with 3 hits, 0 walks, and 9 Ks makes it tough to argue.
41 (35) Michael King Padres Two or fewer runs in 7 of the last 8 starts. He cruised through 6 innings on Saturday night.
42 (47) Max Scherzer Rangers Mad Max driving down the Fury Road to redemption. Or maybe he’s just building up stamina without great strikeout totals in his second start back from injury. You choose your level of dramatic exposition.
43 (46) Matt Waldron Padres He had given up a couple of big flies at Fenway when I wrote this up, but he’s been solid enough to hold this spot.
44 (55) Ben Lively Guardians SEE BELOW
45 (58) Bailey Ober Twins Averaging 9 Ks over his last 3 starts with 4 ER in 21.1 IP? Ok. Back up we go.
46 (57) Nestor Cortes Yankees See the:  Lively, Ben note above that points you below, and try to escape the infinite loop.
47 (73) Jake Irvin Nationals I put personal bias aside here because the QS have been plentiful and he’s ranked 25th on the Player Rater. (14th over the last 8 weeks!)
48 (38) Hunter Greene Reds Beat up for 6 ER against PIT last week, but throwing well at STL when I wrote him up. The strikeouts are still there and the BBs have been good over the last three. His last start made some want to barf…even him!
49 (48) Brady Singer Royals The unmasked Singer, because you already know what you’re going to get. (Decent Ks and ratios).
50 (44) Nick Pivetta Red Sox Canada Check! The earned runs keep piling up, but Pivetta is still striking out more than one per inning and has limited his BBs to just one in each of his last three starts.
51 (52) Nathan Eovaldi Rangers Still racking up a strikeout per inning, but got pumped at MLW last week for 5 ER and 2 HRs.
52 (51) Yoshinobu Yamamoto Dodgers He’s here because Dave Roberts ‘expects him to return this year’. No new news (stutter!) – still a late August return at the earliest. This is mostly a keeper ranking. Drop him 25+ spots in redraft.
53 (70) Erick Fedde White Sox A big boost this week, mostly because we talked a bit about how he should get dealt before the trade deadline. I assume he ends up in a contender’s rotation. He might be too high here, but there aren’t many below him that I would prefer to roster.
54 MacKenzie Gore Nationals Every time I want to move him up, he puts up a stinker. Every time I try to move him down…well, you know.
55 (49) Framber Valdez Astros I almost got Charlie Brown’ed into pushing him up after his last two solid starts. Then he had 13 baserunners with 6 ER Saturday night at NYM to seal the slip here.
56 (52) Justin Verlander Astros He was supposed to be back this week, but didn’t travel with the team. Monitor for now before moving him up or down.
57 Ryan Pepiot Rays SEE BELOW
58 (62) Mitchell Parker Nationals He’s won just once in his last 6 starts, so I guess that’s a bit of a red flag, but I’m still comfortable with him in our Top 60.
59 (53) Bobby Miller Dodgers The strikeouts are there, but so are the BBs and the ERs. Still shaking the rust off after activation.
60 (42) Carlos Rodon Yankees 15 earned runs allowed in his last two starts pushed Rodon way down this week.
61 (57) Yusei Kikuchi Blue Jays These bursts of 4+ earned runs aren’t going to help him get traded to a contender anytime soon.
62 (64) Kutter Crawford Red Sox His last start got washed out (v TOR) but I still believe in the bounceback.
63 Chris Bassitt Blue Jays Threw 6 innings of shutout ball at home vs NYY with 8 Ks Saturday. If he can put together a nice run, I could see him moving up into the 40s.
64 (66) Zach Eflin Rays It was almost Jon Gray here, but Eflin had a much better start last week.
65 (79) Justin Steele Cubs SEE BELOW
66 (68) Brandon Pfaadt Diamondbacks I’m blinded by the upside so I don’t see the ER, BBs, and HRs allowed over the last few weeks.
67 (77) Andrew Abbott Reds Player Rater LOVES him (48th) and the 10 Ks two weeks ago doesn’t hurt. The 6 BBs at STL last week though. That’s not great.
68 (60) Jon Gray Rangers Jeckyll and Hyde over his last 4 starts. 1 ER, 9 ER, 0 ER, 8 ER. It’s all black or all white. There’s no in-between.
69 Yu Darvish Padres Had a setback in his rehab, but was throwing on Saturday. May not be activated this week.
70 (75) Taj Bradley Rays SEE BELOW
71 (43) Javier Assad Cubs A big drop for Assad but the regression fairies brought him straight to the hospital bed last week (15-day IL).
72 (65) Joe Musgrove Padres Transferred to 60-day IL on Friday. He’s progressing to light toss, but still has a long way to go before returning.
73 (71) Hunter Brown Astros Just one earned run in his last 4 starts? Uh oh. It’s time to move him back up. Expect a jump next week.
74 (72) Ben Brown Cubs He’s still injured and without a timeline. Placed on the 15-day IL on June 12, but I read that he’s not eligible until July 23rd. Uh…I’m no calendar expert, but…
75 (61) Brayan Bello Red Sox Even this feels like it’s not enough of a dump. He’s been so bad.
76 (67) Clarke Schmidt Yankees He was eligible to return on July 26th, but that’s now been pushed back to August 2nd. The good news is he started throwing on Friday.
77 (74) Jordan Hicks Giants Wait. You’re telling me a guy who was a reliever for 5 years, who hasn’t pitched more than 6 innings in all but one of his starts this year, and is racking up the ERs and BBs in nearly every start isn’t ranked higher? Gasp.
78 (76) Reese Olson Tigers “But the peripherals!” Ya, sure.
79 (89) Charlie Morton Braves 6.1 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 Ks. I refuse to quit you, Charlie!
80 (78) James Paxton Dodgers Speaking of Canada, The Big Maple’s last three starts were good, but while I wrote this up yesterday the line was looking pretty shaky at SF.
81 (97) Luis Severino Mets I had moved him up based on the 6 scoreless, 3 H, 10 K start last week. Then he got pumped by HOU yesterday. Grain of salt here. Should get dealt at the deadline to a contender if the Mets…well, if they “Met”.
82 (86) Dean Kremer Orioles Nothing in the 80’s is especially bold (except for those pleather pants and hair-sprayed head lettuce – yikes), but Kremer has built up stamina on the rehab stint and is almost ready to return. The bold part? Moving him up to the high 80’s despite his poor results on said rehab assignment.
83 Zack Littell Rays It was easier just to leave him here.
84 (85) Jose Soriano Angels This is more me being hopeful so he can come back and provide strikeouts for my surging mixed league keeper team. Should be back when eligible in early July.
85 (93) Shane Baz Rays I inch him up each week in the hopes that he’ll get recalled, but it might take an injury for him to return to Tampa anytime soon. His numbers in Durham haven’t been stellar.
86 (100) Jameson Taillon Cubs Four decent starts in a row give him a little boost.
87 (NR) Yariel Rodriguez Blue Jays I went to the Streamonator for this one and the next one because I needed to fill a couple of open slots. Yariel is a favorite of mine and SON has him at $13.3 for the two-start week.
88 (NR) Gavin Williams Guardians I was all set to add Sean Manaea here but realized this guy was activated yesterday ahead of a start against CWS this week. I’d activate him despite it being his first game in a while.
89 (80) Kyle Gibson Cardinals SEE BELOW
90 (89) Marcus Stroman Yankees Did he get into a fight with Gleyber this week? That’s probably the only newsworthy thing Stroman’s done in a while.
91 (87) Alec Marsh Royals This Marsh is getting murkier and murkier each week. That said, his last start was much better than the previous two.
92 Blake Snell Giants Getting close to slipping off the list with the repeated IL time.
93 (88) Jordan Montgomery Diamondbacks 2.2 IP, 4 ER, ERA at 6.03. Every time I see JoMo get tuned up I thank my lucky stars that I cut him when I did. What’s the opposite of FOMO? Yep, you guessed it.
94 (NR) Michael Lorenzen Rangers 5 IP, 2 ER, 6 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 3.04 – My actual note: It might be time for me to re-add the human yo-yo to the list.
95 (84) Miles Mikolas Cardinals 4.1 IP, 12 H, 10 R (9 ER), 1 HR, 1 BB, 1 K. There’s the Miles Mikolas we know! Good thing I added him last week! Barf emoji.
96 (NR) Lance Lynn Cardinals I hate that I’m adding him here but with McKenzie getting optioned and Dunning headed back to the bullpen it made sense to insert him instead of a rehabbing Edward Cabrera. Streamonator likes him this week too.
97 (91) DJ Herz Nationals SEE BELOW
98 Bailey Falter Pirates Falter? I hardly even know her! but seriously, 5 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 5 Ks yesterday at ATL was nice (even with the 4 BBs).
99 (NR) Robbie Ray Giants Slated to return after the all-star break and is on a rehab assignment now. Nearly put Edward Cabrera in here instead.
100 (94) Jesus Luzardo Marlins Injured List. Hold here for now.

I’ll roll these out in reverse order just to keep the suspense alive as I’m sure you’re all reading this with bated breath.

SP 91 – 100: The James Naismith section

Naismith didn’t really do anything special…unless you count creating the game of basketball as something special. They used to run a series of commercials up here called “Heritage Minutes”, and this one was the Naismith one.

For our SP 91-100 name, I decided to go with DJ Herz. “Last night a DJ saved my life…” Well, if you were streaming him and banking on it helping you over his last two starts, he certainly was the opposite of a ‘life-saver’. 7 IP, 7 ER, 4 HR, 2 BB, 6 Ks over his last two games (total). That 13-strikeout performance was a glimpse of what could be, but just like what Shohei said to Ippei, “Don’t bet on it”.

SP 81-90: The Ernie Coombs section

This section was a toss-up between DeGrassi (the old series) and Canadian icon, Ernie Coombs (better known as Mr. Dressup). In the end, the votes came back with Coombs as the winner. For the record, the ‘votes’ were my sister most likely killing me if I somehow left this guy off the list. Mr. Dressup was Canada’s version of Mr. Rogers, a children’s television icon who had puppets, songs, and art sessions in his half-hour show every day. As a bonus nod, Fred Rogers was a mentor to Coombs, and the duo was considered the ‘Lennon and McCartney’ of kid’s TV.

Kyle Gibson enters as our SP 81-90 pick, and it’s not a pretty one. I dislike Gibson more than a Fender guitar salesman does. If the number 4 is your thing, you would have loved his last start. 4 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 Ks. I can hear you Kyle Gibson Truthers yelling at your screen right now. “Oh ya?! Well, what about the walks?!” Well, he walked 5.

SP 71-80: Sir Isaac Brock section

So it’s a bit of a cheat because Isaac Brock isn’t really a Canadian, but he’s considered a big deal when it comes to Canadian history. The British general (along with Shawnee chief Tecumseh) is considered one of the main reasons why the Canadians were able to win the War of 1812, burn down the white house, and avoid becoming the biggest state in the U.S.A.

Similarly, Taj Bradley is a bit of a cheat here. I wanted to write him up, but had already done quick notes for the other sections so I couldn’t move him higher than he is here. Since imploding for 9 ER on June 1st, Bradley has given up 2 or fewer earned runs in each of his last 5 starts. Yesterday he had 11 Ks through 5.2 innings against Washington. 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BBs? Yep. That’ll play.

SP 61-70: Neil Young section

I wrote up a whole DFS article a couple of years back with a Neil Young theme, so it’s nice to revisit Uncle Neil here. Is this “Old Man” as great as he used to be? Probably not. But is he still good? Of course, he is.

Speaking of still good, Justin Steele gave up 3+ ER for the first time in 7 starts last week. Outside of that nasty stretch of three starts in May, he’s been good. Is it great to have 6 quality starts in 12 total GS? No. Could I flip him with a guy like Mitchell Parker? Probably. Did I? Not this week. For what it’s worth, the Player Rater has him ranked 95th so this is a decent bump from where he was a couple of weeks ago.

SP 51-60: Sir Frederick Banting section

The diabetics in the crowd will probably know this name, as the Canadian pharmacologist who co-discovered insulin was also the youngest person to ever win a Nobel prize at just 32 years old.

Ryan Pepiot is not 32, nor does he need insulin (I looked it up). He DID, however, have 8 Ks in 5.1 IP last week with just 1 ER. That’s the good news. The not-so-good news is something that those of you in QS leagues could quickly point out. He hasn’t had a quality start since April 29th.

SP 41-50: Alexander Graham Bell section

I don’t know how you can argue with adding the guy who invented the telephone to this list. But I do know that you could probably argue with Blake Lively at SP44…

There were a few names I tried to fit in at SP44, but almost all of them had more warts than Lively. He hasn’t been flashy, but he has been effective. He has also given up more than 3 ER just once over 13 total starts. The geniuses up in the booth say that’s pretty good. (P.S. We have no booth or geniuses).

SP 31-40: Michael J. Fox section

Marty McFly or Alex P. Keaton? If that’s the question, can we just agree that both are acceptable answers to “Which of MJF 80’s characters is the best?”

Speaking of ‘better’, Gerrit Cole’s return from the IL was not in the ‘better’ column. He got roughed up at NYM for 6 ER and 4 HR last week. That’s the bad news, and some people whispered that he might have a tough time coming back from that elbow injury. Well, the good news is that yesterday he got the Jays and we all know how good they are at helping a struggling pitcher look good. I assume Cole finishes that game strong (looked good through 3.2 IP at the time of writing). With a springboard like the Jays anemic offense, Cole may not need 1.21 Jigawatts to kickstart his second half.

SP 21-30: The John Candy section

There are a lot of Canadian actors or comedians that could fit into this spot. Maybe I’m showing my bias because of my age, but John Candy takes the cake as one of the best (weight pun fully noted, but not intended).

This one might be tough, but if anyone has seen the “quality” television that we’re known for producing in Canada, it makes more sense. Plus, there’s a bonus here for the PEI reference.

Jared Jones is our guy in this slot. Let’s call him “Uncle Buc-caneer” (I’ll be here all week). The good news is he had a nice 7 inning, 3-hit, 2 earned run start with 8 strikeouts in his last game. The bad news is that was June 22nd. I have a bad feeling that Jones and Skenes will be on the “workload management” plan sooner rather than later if they aren’t already.

SP 11-20: The Wayne Gretzky section

Many who reside in the Great White North will tell you that Gretzky is the greatest of all time. Bobby Orr? Yes, I’d argue that. Mario Lemieux? Sure. But Wayne-o gets the nod simply because he rewrote the record book, almost literally, with benchmarks that will never be broken. A lot of our citizens even dub him the greatest Canadian of all time, but that title is awarded in our next section.

Is George Kirby the G.O.A.T. of MLB? No. But allow me to drag you down the pathway of chaos that is the mind path of MarmosDad. Kirby and the rest of the Mariners rotation reminded me of the Beastie Boys’ anthology. (Please stay with me). When I just focus on one, pitcher or album, I can fully appreciate that it’s the best of the bunch. Then, when I change my focus to another, it’s tough to say that it’s any worse than the previous one. Then when we have a look at the third? Well, you get the point. George Kirby can be Paul’s Boutique. Logan Gilbert is Check Your Head. And Bryan Woo? Well, he has to be Licensed to IL….I mean Ill.

SP 1-10: The Terry Fox Section

A lot of people would argue that the top slot should belong to an athlete or celebrity. Well, what if I told you that this guy was both?

Growing up in Canada as a kid in the 80s, this was the guy that we all looked up to as the greatest Canadian hero. The kid who decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. It’s been really cool to see my own kids learn the whole story and watch the same clips that I watched when I was young. I can’t do the whole story justice here, but if you haven’t learned all there is to learn about Terry Fox, I’d suggest you check it out. It’s pretty remarkable.

For The Terry Fox section, the focus is Tarik Skubal. Skubal had a couple of less-than-ideal starts of 4 ER (each) before bouncing back last week. The 7 innings of 3-hit shutout ball with just one walk and 7 Ks was enough to push him into the Top 3 again this week. It helps that he’s the Streamonator’s second highest-rated start this week at $39.8 with two games on the road (at MIN and CIN).

I figure we can finish off with a video from a good buddy’s annual fireworks display from last night. This night may or may not directly affect the accuracy of my edits, so apologies if there are any trips!

And the finisher that doesn’t do the whole show justice, but gives us a nice wrap-up…

That’s all for this week! I hope you enjoyed it! Happy Canada Day to everyone and a Happy Early 4th to all of my American friends in the South!

Drop some comments in the chat if you’re feeling extra fired up about some of the names I do (or don’t) have here. Have a great week!
