Operator Barrick Gold (NYSE:GOLD) said Monday the Porgera gold mine in Papua New Guinea is running without restriction following the massive landslide that the government said buried more than 2,000 people.
Barrick (GOLD) said the mine is providing support to the survivors of the mountainside collapse, which happened 30 km away from the mine site.
Heavy equipment and assistance reportedly have been slow to arrive at the landslide area due to the remote location that is plagued by tribal warfare.
The Porgera mine, which was re-started earlier this year after being in dispute for four years, is an underground gold mine run jointly by Barrick (GOLD), China’s Zijin Mining (OTCPK:ZIJMF) (OTCPK:ZIJMY) and local partners.
