Philippine transportation secretary Jaime Bautista pointed out the importance of a robust transport sector with regard to boosting tourism in the country.

Addressing participants at the recently concluded 11th Travel Madness Expo, Bautista spoke of how a more efficient mass transportation system could help increase the number of foreign travellers coming into the Philippines.

Bautista said: “Our confidence in anticipating higher tourist arrivals hinges on a strong transport sector. Enhancing and modernising our transport systems will be crucial in ensuring tourists enjoy their vacations, beginning with their journeys to and from their homes [by way of air travel.]”

The secretary added that his department’s current flagship projects will not only ensure seamless mobility for the local population, but these will be critical in supporting the promotional initiatives of the Department of Tourism.

Airports and commuter rail in the works

Among the initiatives cited by Bautista in his speech were the ongoing modernisation of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Laguinduingan, and Bohol-Panglao Airports; as well as the development of the New Manila International Airport in Bulacan, a province to the north of the National Capital Region.

The country’s seaports are also being given upgrades to make sea travel to various local tourist destinations more convenient.

With regard to urban transportation, progress has also been noted for the North-South Commuter Railway and the Metro Manila Subway System.
