Disney (NYSE:DIS) and Pixar’s latest animation flick, “Inside Out 2,” exceeded expectations, generating $62M in domestic ticket sales on Friday, marking the year’s biggest box office opening day so far.
The Kelsey Mann-directed film’s record-breaking opening day haul also includes $13M generated from Thursday evening previews.
With positive reviews from critics, the $200M sequel will be on course to move past “Dune: Part Two” as the biggest domestic opening in 2024, Variety reported.
In March, the Timothée Chalamet movie, distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), made $82.5M in its opening weekend.
Friday’s haul could land “Inside Out 2” in the $140M to $150M range domestically over Father’s Day weekend, among the top three launches for an animated movie.
Incredibles 2, another Pixar sequel, and Universal’s (CMCSA) Nintendo-based (OTCPK:NTDOY) (OTCPK:NTDOF) flick The Super Mario Bros. Movie hold the top spots for the best-animated movie openings in the U.S.
