Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” was the top box office draw this weekend with $14 million in estimated ticket sales. Based on the popular comic-strip, the animated movie overtook Paramount Pictures’ “IF” and Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” with their $10.8 million haul, according to Comscore’s estimates.
Ticket sales for “Garfield” fell 42% from its premiere week in North America. In international markets, it reaped $27 million to lift its total sales to $152.2 million. The movie features the voice of Chris Pratt and won’t face a rival in animated movies until Disney’s “Inside Out 2” premieres on June 14.
“Furiosa” fell 59% from its first weekend. The post-apocalypse movie has domestic sales of $49.7 million and a global total of $114.4 million.
Several films opened on more than 1,000 screens this weekend, such as Sony/Crunchyroll’s “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle,” IFC’s “In a Violent Nature,” Roadside Attractions’ “Summer Camp” and Bleecker Street’s “Ezra.”
Ticket sales this year are down about 24% from a year ago, and 42% from 2019’s prepandemic levels, according to data from Comscore.
On the corresponding weekend last year, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” garnered $120.7 million while “The Little Mermaid” brought in $41.4 million in its second weekend.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
