The Payroll Pages will default to the 2025 view after the World Series, but for now, clicking over from a team page will take you to 2024. To view the 2025 page, simply change the Season toggle:
In case you’re new to the Payroll Pages, let’s go over what you can find on them.
Player Info
- Major league service time (not yet official, hence the blank values; we usually get official numbers in January).
- Contract details (years, contract total, and option/opt out details, if applicable).
- Average annual value (AAV) of each contract. Some deals have a lower AAV because of deferrals; if applicable, that will be noted in the Contract column.
- Yearly salary breakdown through 2031, with applicable options/opt outs highlighted per the legend at the top of the page.
Players are separated into three sections:
- Players with guaranteed contracts.
- Players eligible for arbitration (with contract estimates courtesy Matt Swartz and MLBTradeRumors).
- Notable players not yet eligible for arbitration.
All players with guaranteed contracts, as well as those eligible for arbitration, are included. But as you’ll notice, the “Notable Players Not Yet Eligible for Arbitration” section isn’t all-encompassing.
Generally, we include all the players who we believe are in the majors for good, or who have at least made strong enough contributions to clear the bar of being considered notable. I also like to include top prospects as soon as they come up, just to add additional context to the team’s payroll situation going forward. The names listed are checked and updated at least monthly.
Other Payments
- Money owed to or received from other teams.
- Money owed to players no longer with the team (included after midseason trades).
Some teams will also have an Other Payments (Luxury Tax) table, which lists adjustments that only apply to the luxury tax payroll total. For example, if a player opts out, it may change the average annual value of his contract relative to what it was at the time of signing. That would lead to his former team being credited or debited, thereby lowering or raising their luxury tax payroll number.
Team Totals
- Totals for each year that include at least one guaranteed contract.
- Estimated “real money” payroll.
- Estimated luxury tax payroll, which includes player benefits and payment into the pre-arbitration bonus pool.
