- A Walmart executive said that the company is opposed to installing panic buttons in its stores after the New York State Senate recently passed a bill requiring large retail stores to do so to curb workplace violence.
- Walmart (NYSE:WMT) EVP, Corporate Affairs, Dan Bartlett said that the buttons aren’t needed since most of the time, triggering them would lead to false alarms.
- “Eight out of 10 times somebody thinks something’s going on, there’s actually not,” he told Reuters.
- In April, the retail giant hired a chief safety officer to monitor the safety of its employees.
- Bartlett added that it would be impractical to install the buttons in all 4700 of its locations.
- The legislation also includes provisions requiring written workplace violence prevention programs and workplace violence training.
- New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (Dem.) has 10 days to sign the Retail Worker Safety Act or veto it. If she does nothing, the legislation automatically becomes law.
