Prospect News: Stash List Volume 5: James Wood If You Could

Graduated From Stash List Volume 4: The Trials Of Jobe: Jhonkensy Noel, David Festa

Jackson Holliday is not on this list. One of the few rules I’ve implemented here is that once you’re a big leaguer in the current season, you’re off the list. Holliday cashed those major league game checks, so he won’t be represented here.

1. Nationals OF James Wood | 21 | AAA

Word on the street is Wood will be promoted to debut Monday at home against the Mets on ESPN. He went 3-for-5 with a walk and a double on Friday night. I’m going to leave him here and take the list to 11 just to cover all the bases.

2. Rays RHP Shane Baz | 25 | AAA

Has 35 strikeouts and a 1.57 ERA  in 23 June innings. He’s still walking some guys and has a 1.30 WHIP over that same stretch, but some of that is a nasty-stuff issue that could come out in the wash with big league umps and catchers.

3. Twins 2B Brooks Lee | 23 | AAA

Lee has dominated since his return to play, slashing .342/.412/.632 with six homers and a 12.9 percent strikeout rate in 18 Triple-A games. The Twins are piecing it together at a lot of spots this season, and the switch-hitting Lee could help Rocco manage the platoon math of this modern life.

4. Orioles 3B Coby Mayo | 22 | AAA

Mayo is not on the club’s 40-man roster. That and Baltimore’s recent track record of moving their rookies up and down are the main things keeping Mayo out of the two spot here.

5. Rays 3B Junior Caminero | 20 | IL

Strained his quad in late May and was expected to miss four-to-six weeks.

6. Yankees OF Jasson Dominguez | 21 | IL

Injured on June 19 with an oblique issue. Will reportedly miss six-to-eight weeks.

7. Dodgers RHP River Ryan | 25 | AAA

The Dodgers run through a lot of pitchers so might soon need Ryan, who has pitched well since an awful first night back in Triple-A against the hot-hitting young Houstons. He’s thrown three shutout innings and 3.2 innings allowing one run in two starts since that night he couldn’t escape the first in his AAA debut. Probably not ready for Hollywood tomorrow, but soon.

8. Tigers RHP Jackson Jobe | 21 | A+

Threw three perfect innings with four strikeouts in his second High-A rehab start coming off a hamstring injury. Detroit is eight games out of the final wild card spot. I suspect Jobe can still force the issue if he’s dominant enough, but the number crunchers might want to leave him in the minors until September at this point. If he does debut this season, a Paul Skenes style burst is within the possible outcomes.

9. Diamondbacks 3B Deyvison De Los Santos | 21 | AAA

Turned 21 on June 21, so that’s fun for everyone. Sorry, something about this name makes my fingers yearn for more lyricism in our day-to-day lives. Not like a musical, but you know, more cool names and words and sentences, maybe? I think that’s a huge reason people clicked with Succession and then Shogun. Among a million other things, we just liked how it sounded. Anyway, this kid’s good. Sure, he’s got some holes in his game. Swings too much at pitches he can’t punish and such, but he also has 23 home runs in 71 games across two levels against players who are like Logan Roy to his Roman, very senior people compared to him.

10. Padres OF Tirso Ornelas | 24 | AAA

San Diego needs an outfielder while Fernando Tatis recouperates, and Ornelas has been on fire in the minors, slashing .350/.420/.650 with five home runs and two steals in his last 17 games. He’s been pretty good all season, checking in with a 119 wRC+ and slash line of .298/.380/.507 in 62 games. Ornelas has always had plate skills and power but got pushed aggressively through the system and put up some subpar stat lines before stagnating a bit in the high minors.

11. Tigers 3B Jace Jung | 23 | IL

Sent to the Injured List with a sore right wrist on June 21. I’m holding a spot while we await a little more information, but of course you could put any number of names here if you don’t have time to wait on the Jung: Moises Ballesteros, Adrian Del Castillo, Luken Baker, Shay Whitcomb, Griffin Conine, Yunior Severino, Matt Wallner. All have a pretty good chance at getting a look sooner than later.

Thanks for reading!
